  • Higher moisture sensitivity than powder-bound glass mats

  • Suitable for polyester and vinyl ester resins

Glass mats are fibreglass reinforcement materials in which all glass fibres have a length of 25 and/or 50 mm and are randomly oriented, giving the same strength in each direction. Compared to the powder-bound glass mat, the emulsion-bound glass mat has a cloudy appearance (white streaks). In addition, emulsion-bound glass mats have higher moisture sensitivity than powder-bound glass mats.

The advantage of an emulsion-bound glass mat is that it is usually a little easier to process and less fluffy than a powder-bound glass mat.

Application

Emulsion-bound glass mats are regularly seen in the polyester industry where products are made that are not subject to continuous water exposure and in the production of moulded parts (which do not need to be transparent). The styrene in the polyester or vinyl ester resin dissolves the binder, allowing the fibres to move independently of each other. This makes these glass mats easier to print into complex shapes. Emulsion-bound glass mats are not suitable for processing with epoxy resins.

Romar-Voss Composites' product range includes emulsion-bound glass mats from our A-brand supplier China Jushi Co., Ltd. We also offer an emulsion-bound glass mat under our own label.
