Glass mats are fibreglass reinforcement materials in which all glass fibres have a length of 25 and/or 50 mm and are randomly oriented, giving the same strength in each direction. With a powder-bound glass mat, after soaking with a transparent resin, one obtains laminates with a high degree of transparency and low moisture sensitivity.
Application
These properties make powder-bound glass mats especially suitable for making products that are constantly exposed to water, such as in boat building, swimming pool construction and in the production of water attractions. In addition, powder-bound glass mats are highly suitable in the production of products where a high degree of transparency is required, such as polyester skylights. The styrene in the polyester or vinyl ester resin dissolves the binder, allowing the fibres to move independently of each other. This makes these glass mats easier to print into complex shapes. Powder-bound glass mats are not suitable for processing with epoxy resins.
